Costa JVs come from behind to win final game of the year!

Coach Michael Hammer’s JV side maintained their home undefeated mark as they won a thrilling seesaw battle against the Saints from St. Anthony HS. The Mustangs opened the scoring with a beautifully executed “up and under” kick as Fly Half Evan Anderson popped the ball over the Saints’ defensive line, as Fullback Aiden Martinez raced downfield catching the ball on the dead run for the first Try of the match. Martinez converted his own Try. Moments later the JV side was again on the attack. Playing as a team, the Costa boys managed to drive the ball inside the 10 where Junior Dylan Swerdlow took a pass, got tackled at the 1 meter line and having great presence extended the ball just inside the goal line for the Try. However the Saints answered each score and the Mustangs found themselves down at halftime.

Winger Giuseppe Meola caught a punt in traffic, offloaded to Scrum Half Christian Hunter who then found Prop (and Man of the Match) Reed Vabrey as he raced 28 meters for the score. Not long after that Winger Jackson Fischer perfectly timed a pass by the Saints as he picked it off for a score from 36 meters. However, the boys from St. Anthony’s are a big, physical and tough lot and would not go away. They mounted a furious comeback to go ahead again. But the Mustangs would not end the year with a loss. With less than two minutes to go they scored the game winner on what was their best and most unselfish rugby of the year. Martinez took a pass and found Sophomore Luke Weaver who avoided a tackle and alertly offloaded to Anderson who then beautifully drew a Saint defender allowing him to offload to Winger Andrew Brumley who was at full pace where he raced the final 27 meters for the game winning score. Martinez converted to give the JVs a thrilling 27-22 victory. It was a great cap to the season. Well done boys!
