Costa Lady Ruggers close out season with big win!
The Mira Costa Girl’s Rugby team finished the season in style by playing their two best matches of the year. The girls played the top team in the area, the Carson Colts, in a rematch of an earlier contest. In the first contest the Colts shut out the Mustangs while scoring over 70 points. However, the rematch was a much different story as the Lady Ruggers not only scored on the Colts, but also held them to only 21 points. However, their rematch against the View Park Prep Knights was indeed a giant step forward for the growing program. Our Mustangs jumped out to an early lead as Junior Center Ashley Brownsberger picked a loose ball and blew past the Knight defense scoring from 66 meters out. Captain Alexis Fonua converted to give the girls an early 7-0 lead. Not long after that Freshman Winger Camielle Boll playing in her first ever rugby game took a very timely offload from Fonua and raced 42 meters down the east touchline for her first career Try, earning her the right to drink from the boot. Fonua converted giving the Mustangs a 14-0 lead. Boll was not only stellar on offense but she also made 2 critical open field tackles against some very good View Park runners. Just prior to the half it was Brownsberger again as she took a very timely offload from Fonua in open space as she raced for another Try. Brownsberger’s speed and tenacious play has been a spark for the Mustangs all year.
The second half was more solid rugby by the Mustangs. This time it was the Mustang’s unselfish Captain Alexis Fonua (who has received a scholarship to the #1 Women’s Rugby program in the nation-Life University). After setting up two scores, the Senior found a loose ball and went 62 meters for the score giving the Lady Ruggers a 26-7 win. It was fitting for Fonua to score the final Try of the match. This was the Girl’s final game of a very successful 2nd year. While we will greatly miss our Captain Alexis Fonua and this senior class, our future is very bright as we have some extremely tough and talented young ladies ready to carry the banner for Mira Costa. Well done ladies!!! |
