Basketball – Girls

Welcome to the Mira Costa Girls Basketball Program. Coach Jeff Herdman leads our coaching staff to help develop our players skills and strengths. From Frosh/Soph to Varsity, the players will develop skills, strong work ethics and a commitment to their team. The basketball program is extremely proud of past teams who have led them to the CIF Finals in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016.

The Basketball Boosters help fund all the teams and works closely with the coaching staff to create a positive basketball experience for all the girls.

Tryout Info

Girls Basketball is a Winter Sport.
Girls Basketball is a cut sport, although it typically has fairly big rosters. There are 3 teams: Varsity, JV and Frosh/Soph with a total of 35-45 players
Tryouts are in late August generally during the first full week of school. There is usually an informal tryout for players who are in fall sports and cannot make the first tryouts. Tryouts generally last 2-3 days, and are supervised by the coaching staff. Decisions are made the weekend following tryouts, and all players are notified thereafter.
Prior experience is not required, but is helpful, as Mira Costa basketball is fairly competitive. Playing travel/club basketball is the best way to get ready. In addition, being in good physical condition is important, as our style of play is based on significant running.
Practices begin immediately following tryouts and generally involve two days of conditioning, and two to three days in the gym.

Practices will go to 4-6 days per week in late October.

For players in a fall sport, they will join basketball when their sport is finished.

Games start in mid-November, and Bay League games begin in December. The season runs until the end of January although the Varsity can run 2-3 weeks further depending on CIF playoffs.
There are workouts in the spring, generally 3-4 days per week, until school lets out for the summer. There is a summer school program, with practices in the late afternoon. PE credit is offered. This program is not mandatory, but is highly recommended for those players who want to play at the varsity level. Players can miss practices for vacations, although more than three absences would generally mean no PE credit for the course.
