Happy Holidays from our Mira Costa Rugby family to yours!

Happy Holidays from our Mira Costa Rugby family to yours! As we head into the holiday break, we’re grateful for our players, coaches, families, alumni, and supporters—and we’re excited to share an early-season update that’s got everyone buzzing.

Boys Rugby — Fast start, big momentum
The Mira Costa Boys Rugby team opened the season on the road at Servite High School with a decisive win against Friars 74–7, with tries from Henry Frost, Luke Meeker, Theo Mackaman and Carter Libby, to name a few. With strong ball movement, clean handling, and great support lines, the Mustangs consistently exploited available space to hammer out a victory. Summed up perfectly by Team Captain Colin McGinley: “It was a team effort.”

The following week, Costa headed to San Diego to take on perennial power St. Augustine High School in a high-energy rugby day. The JV side capped their match with a dramatic final-play try to seal a 19–14 victory. Then the Varsity match delivered a thrilling back-and-forth battle. Costa held the lead deep into the second half, but St. Augustine crossed in the final minutes to edge the Mustangs 27–26 in a tough, hard-fought finish.

Girls Rugby — Strong tournament showing and leadership shining
The Mira Costa Girls Rugby team traveled to Cathedral Catholic High School (San Diego) for their second SCRIF tournament, and they kept their strong start rolling. The A Side earned two solid wins to move their record to 3–1, while the B Side battled hard and dropped a match to a very strong Patrick Henry High School squad. This year’s team leadership has been outstanding, led by Captain Savannah Swartzlander, alongside Dora Tuitutpou, Josie Atkins, and standout freshman newcomer Leah Piehl.
