Sonoma Music Festival, All District Band Festival, Indoor Drumline and Winterguard Competitions!

It was another busy month for all of the MCHS Band programs. The month started with a very successful All District Band Festival on March 1st featuring all of the districts bands, which includes elementary school through middle school, and all of the high school ensembles. The MCHS Marching Band started the evening by playing the “Star Spangled Banner” and Mr. John Jackson was honored for all his support of our school music programs. There was an amazing turnout and it was so lovely to see current MCHS Band members as well future Band members. As a fundraiser the band sold special candy bars, one of which featured a golden ticket, and the lucky winner of the golden ticket was 5th grader Anna Zimbalist from Grandview. She will be a guest conductor at our Pops Concert on May 31st. Congratulations Anna!

Next up was an all day visit to MBMS from the Indoor Drumline and Winterguard teams. They performed their current shows for all the P.E. classes and then had interested students come down and try out the percussion instruments and Winterguard flags and equipment. It was a long day, but was thrilling to see so much interest in these programs from the middle school students. The next day Winterguard went down to San Diego for their first competition at Del Norte High School. Their show, “The Shining”, earned rave reviews form the judges and they placed second in their division.

This past week both the Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony groups went to Sonoma State University for the 6th Annual Sonoma Invitational Wind Band and Orchestra Festival. Over 50 high school groups attended and performed at the festival. They received feedback from distinguished adjudicators and were able to work with the judges after the performances. Our student musicians were also able to watch other groups perform at the festival, as well as spending an afternoon in San Francisco on Thursday taking in the sights and attending a performance at Davies Symphony Hall.

This past Saturday the Indoor Drumline competed in their first tournament at Marina High School in Huntington Beach with their show, “Rite of the Mountain Spirit”. In spite of the rainy day, they had a great show and placed 1st in Visual, 1st in Visual Effect and 3rd overall in their division.

Looking forward, there are more Winterguard and Indoor Drumline Competitions this month, as well as the “Eclectic Ensemble” performance and fundraiser on March 23rd. On March 24th the Jazz groups head off to Mesa, Arizona to perform in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival.
