Please see Mr. Hernandez’s letter:
My name is Michael Hernandez and I am thrilled to announce that I have been selected for the 2021 Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship with Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society! As one of only 50 educators selected from across the U.S. and Canada, I am honored to be chosen for this professional development opportunity that will allow me to bring geographic awareness to my high school students at Mira Costa High School.
The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship selects exemplary educators to embark on a life-changing voyage to one of the many remote and extraordinary environments the Lindblad fleet explores around the world. Given the ongoing pandemic and travel restrictions, my field-based experience is currently on hold. However, once conditions allow, I will embark on a Lindblad Expeditions’ voyage to experience natural wonders alongside an outstanding expedition team including marine biologists, geologists, historians, scientists, undersea specialists, and National Geographic photographers. I will return home with compelling ideas to enhance my curriculum and am excited to translate my experience into documentary and journalism projects for my students, colleagues, and community.
As I patiently await my departure, I’ve continued to do all I can to further my students’ understanding of the world. As a journalism, cinema and photography teacher, I’ve adapted my curriculum for remote learning and continue to share ideas to help other teachers do the same. I’ve published a book to help teachers create podcasts for the classroom, developed an online course for media literacy, and curated an ongoing list of resources for remote teaching.
My passion and love for teaching has brought me to this moment, and I am incredibly grateful for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Please let me know if you would like to schedule a time to speak with me or if you have any questions about the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship. Also, should it be of interest, I’d be happy to share hi-res photos to help tell my story.
