CONGRATULATIONS MCHS JAZZ 1 STUDENTS NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!

This past weekend the MCHS Jazz 1 Band traveled to compete in the 2024 National Jazz Festival in Philadelphia and we had amazing results.

MCHS Jazz Band finished FIRST place in the L-1 Large Ensemble Category
Ewan McPhee (12th grade – trumpet) won the 2024 National Jazz Festival Outstanding Musician for the MCHS Jazz 1 Band & Outstanding Musician award in the large ensemble division
Miles McPhee (12th grade – saxophone) was selected to be in the National Jazz Festival Diplomat (All-Star) Band directed by Wayne Tucker .

Huge thank you to Mr. Carlson (MCHS Band Director)for all his hard work preparing the students for this moment. Thank you to our parent volunteers/chaperones, especially Carolyn Mukai and Lana Imbagliazzo, for planning this fantastic trip for our students.

Tryout Info

Marching Band and Colorguard are no cut programs, and can be taken for PE credit. No prior marching band or colorguard experience is required.

It is a year-round program.
Concerts and Jazz 1 band assessments are held in May/June. MBMS student scheduling is coordinated by Denise Haslop. Hermosa, Redondo and all other new students contact Mr. Carlson to schedule an assessment. All Marching Band students are required to be in a concert ensemble class: Wind Symphony, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band or Jazz Band 1. Colorguard students do not need to schedule an assessment, and are not required to be in a concert ensemble class. Colorguard students can sign up by registering for the “Flags” class when they complete their scheduling request.
The Marching Band & Colorguard season goes from August through November. Incoming Freshman have practice once a week in April-June prior to attending Mira Costa. Colorguard students may elect to continue in guard during the spring semester by participating in Winterguard (which also appears as “Flags” on the student’s schedule).
There is a mandatory Marching Band & Colorguard camp from noon to 8 pm two weeks prior to fall semester; 1 evening practice/week in June and July (absence due to vacation is excused.)
All Marching Band & Colorguard students members are Varsity members. All members perform at Field Competitions, Football Games, Disneyland and Parades.
