Mustangs finish season with amazing run in CIF playoffs!

The Mustang football team finished their amazing run in the CIF playoffs falling just short of beating a very athletic team from Santa Clarita Golden Valley.

The Mustangs for the 13th consecutive week fell behind early as the Grizzlies blocked a Costa punt, which led to their wide receiver making a spectacular catch in the end zone for the early lead.  However, the Costa boys responded with a 32 yard touchdown pass from QB Nick Carpino to Cole Trejo, who made an amazing catch in the end zone.  A few series later Golden Valley responded with another TD pass.  A pivotal play occurred late in the 2nd quarter.  Faced with a 4th and 1 on their own 32 the Mustangs opted to punt.  Unfortunately, the Grizzlies’ punt returner (a USC commit) fielded the ball and returned it 69 yards for what would eventually be the winning touchdown.  Despite being down at halftime 20-7 the Mustangs fought back.

The Mustangs answered by orchestrating a beautiful drive culminating with a 26 yard field goal by Jack Austin.  Meanwhile, the defense had completely shut down the Golden Valley offense.  Costa scored again as FB Jonah Tavai ran over the opposition from 1 yard out, and after a successful 2 point conversion, the Mustangs found themselves down by only two points.  The defense made a critical 4th down stop to give the ball back to the offense with less than two minutes to go.  However, it was not meant to be as their game winning drive stalled.
Despite a 6-7 overall record it was truly a successful year for the Costa footballers as they fought adversity throughout the year with a brutal non-league schedule, injuries to some key players, and a few bad breaks, finally falling two points short of a bid to the CIF Championship.
